Contains considerable material relating to the Harvard Medical School, including minutes and correspondence of the Committee on Hygiene and Preventive Medicine about establishing a department; letters and bulletins about the public health program at Columbia University; Ernst's reminiscences about the Harvard bacteriological laboratory; and minutes and correspondence from the Committee on Public Lectures. Other professional files include lecture notes on bacteriology and copies of Lowell Institute lectures; laboratory notes; and letters, 1906, concerning the photography of bacteria. Personal material contains diary entries, 1900-1901; thesis, 1880; letters of condolence at Ernst's death; and other items.

Ernst (Harvard, M.D. 1880) taught bacteriology at the Harvard Medical School from 1885 to 1922; he was probably the first to lecture on the subject as a part of the regular course curriculum in an American medical school. He was responsible for the organization of a bacteriology laboratory under the auspices of the City of Boston which initially worked toward detection and prevention of diphtheria.
